About Us

Straight out of Porto (literally): The opportunity to do this fell to us when in the beautiful Portuguese city of Porto, where we spent a few weeks throwing ideas around while enjoying the delights of the Time Out Market and everything else that glorious place had to offer.

Porto Press is an independent publisher of books for professionals, academics and interested readers across a range of subject areas including wildlife, history and the built environment. 

In July 2025 we were delighted to welcome the authors of Whittles Publishing. A long-established publisher, it was set up by Dr Keith Whittles and was based in Caithness. Whittles is now an imprint of Porto Press and its complete range of books continue to be available in print form from retailers and via this website.

Distribution of all Porto Press titles is via Booksource in the UK and Simon & Schuster in the US. 

Meet the Team

I have worked in commercial roles within a variety of publishing companies for nearly 40 years. Most recently, I set up and ran Critical Publishing for 12 years with a colleague; a company specialising in providing books and ebooks for a range of professions. 

I am responsible for commissioning new titles and for sales and marketing.

Dave - dave@portopress.com
I am a technical editor of 40 years’ experience in a variety of roles, latterly as documentation manager for a well known science company. Have been a newspaper sub-editor and once ran a small publisher specialising in the social history of leisure.

I am responsible for production, printing and everything else Di tells me to do, which mainly involves kettles and Hobnobs.
